“Katangala Rajamaha Viharaya” is situated in forest with different kind of trees and it is in Kandy Katugasthota area Halloluwa village. This temple is called “Nilabbapathraramaya” or “Nilpauwa”. This temple was built king “Walagamba” with cauldron of the meditation for monk as a monastery.
About the temple
“Katangala Rajamaha Viharaya” was reconstruction in period of Kandy in the king “Kirth Sri Rajasingha” (c:e 1747- 1782) by ”Waliveta Asarana Sarana Saranankara Sangaraja Himi”. According to legend before the king’s dead the person “Kaduwaththe Maha Nilame” who was complete the work of this temple. main joss house was located in the inside of the crypt with cauldron. so then this temple is named as “Katarangala”. There are another crypts around Without the temple is in crypt.
The last monk “Maliyadewa”who was come from India bought four “Dabaran” idols. This “Dabaran” idols was built included the residual part of meadow which lord Buddha cremation. And also there are another viewpoint is it made by “Dabu” +”Ranin” so it become “Dabaran” idols. The “Maliyadewa” monk was bought these four idols. Those statues are in “Wattarama Malimahapaya Viharaya”, “Kothmale Pusulpitiya Viharaya”, “Mathara Kaburulena Viharaya” and “Sarasiyapaththuwe Halloluwa Katarangala Viharaya”. These idols were bought in 1925 to “Katangala Viharaya”. There are relation about “Karmacharya Mederigama Sumana Indrajothi Dammarakkitha Himi” for this idol.
“Katangala Viharaya” was protect historical information silently, give the new energy for dispensation and the king “Kirthi Sri Rajasingha” was give lands and royal respect. The “Gammulle Rathanapala Himi” was the student of “Waliveta Saranankara Sangaraja Himi” he was the language eminent. He was translate “Vimanawaththu Prakaranaya” into Sinhala and give to the king. By that the king was understand the knowledge and literature eminent about this monk and gave this temple and lands for maintenance this temple. There are lots of valuable antiquities are protected the “Pitakande ganananda Himi” who is present incumbent of here. Meanwhile the king “Kirthi Sri Rajasingha” who was built tusk “Karaduwa”, a sword which he use with lizard face and the casing, silver “Karaduwa” which use the “Waliveta Sangaraja Hini” use
